The Year of the Ox! Good Luck Coaster Crochet Pattern

Hi! Tomorrow is the Lunar New Year! It will be the year of the ox. In honor of the holiday, here is a free pattern to make yourself a good luck coaster!

This character is pronounced "foo" and looks like this: 福. It means luck, or fortune. Upside down in Chinese sounds the same as arrive, so if you turn it upside down, luck is supposed to arrive.

Materials:

A very small amount of worsted weight yarn (preferably in red and gold) - I used Big Twist Value Solids and a mystery yarn from a long time ago.

5.0mm hook

Notions - yarn needle, scissors

Abbreviations - see abbreviations page

Pattern notes

- you can use whatever your favorite stitch for color work is! I used regular single crochet, but center single crochet, back loop single crochet, and extended single crochet would be nice too. Keep in mind the character might come out a little warped.

- you can adjust the hook size or how many strands of yarn you use to adjust the size of your coaster

- carry the unworking color along the top edge of your work, encasing it with the working color.
